Nicolas Jaar - Essential Mix (05-19-2012)

An incredible musical Journey, so cinematic / epic. Definitely the first time i’ve ever heard Baroque music in an essential mix.  Its a strange mix but really engaging, he’s re-defined the art of the soundscape mix with this and slightly fucked with the BBC Radio one essential mix format whilst doing it.

Here some notes from a talk i attended in SXSW interactive festival which i thought might be of interest.

South by Southwest Interactive (SXSWi) is commonly referred to as ‘Spring break for geeks’ and is a place to meet, collaborate and network with people who shape the future of interactive technology. Sitting down at a panel or seminar you can rub shoulders with some of the leaders of toady’s online community in a relaxed way that you would never be able to do otherwise. I’ve met some of my heroes out here and it’s incredible to get a chance to chat face to face with them.

Microsoft Kinect is the technology which is poised to unlock the next generation of digital design and allows us to bridge the gaps between physical and digital.
As Kinect becomes more prevalent, accessible, and smarter as an open source tool we need to look at how this new technology expands our palette of interactive experiences.
The next generation of user experience will be based on human senses, we need to embrace the characteristics of human interaction to harness natural user interaction. The Kinetic today is good for full body immersion but not navigation and precise interaction, the challenge of gaming isn’t relevant to navigation.

There are several inherent challenges with creating ‘natural’ navigation with kinect. The 2D plane we are familiar with from point and click interfaces on the desktop is nearly impossible to recreate in 3D space accurately. To create natural navigational experiences we have to consider gain, fatigue (waving our arms about makes users tired!), and throw out the old languages of point and click interaction.

So, how should we be doing it?

•Look at human gesture properties

•How far can a person reach and what’s comfortable?

•Strength, What part of a human is strong? and what areas are weak.

•Precision, Fingers are precise but not strong, shoulders are strong but not precise

•Endurance, You don’t want to hold up your arm for long periods of time to interact with the menu.

•Joint movement Circles are easy to make with your arm or hand but making straight lines is very difficult due to joint movement.

To create interaction with kinect we must also understand its limitations

•Field of vision

•Occlusion, Kinect only has one ‘eye’ so anything between the user and the movement you are recording will stop the camera from picking up details.

•Resolution, the camera opn a Kinect is not high resolution.

•Detail, How detailed are the interactions we need to see, the further away a user is, the less precision and detail we can record.

•Speed, how fast can a user move?.. can Kinect keep up?

What is a natural user interface?
Human to human interaction is incredibly detailed, and we’re very good at communicating, we study facial expression, eye movement, tone of voice etc to get a deep understanding of the message we’re listening to when we communicate with each other. We’re born communicators, from the moment we’re born we start this communication process. Because of this human interaction is central to understanding that the more senses we use for interaction design, the better we understand the navigation and the more confident we are about our own interaction.

How can we use Kinect to help create natural interaction?
by combining the built in input methods of the kinect system sound, vision, and gesture to create multi modal interfaces rather than just using one at a time for a very shallow interaction experience.

Here’s the official video of Joy Orbison’s remix of Lana del ray’s ‘Video games’  love the understated feel to this and the fact that they called on Joy orbison to do the remix is amazing.  Listened to the Lana Del Ray album the other day… and apart from video games this was a giant musical anti climax. Really thought she was going to be great after seeing her on Jools Holland http://youtu.be/IOP2Yd_jpYQ

Opening animation for the BT2 iPad app

An app I designed recently for Brown Thomas Department store for thier BT2 Denim bar called ‘Destination Denim’. There was a big design challenge on this job as it required us to design and code for iPad, iPhone and Android phones, which took into account a largte number of variants in terms of screen sizes, orientation and operating system requirements.  I also created a nice little app intro animation for this which worked out quite well which you can look at here [vimeo]

you can download it in the iTunes store here or for android here
